Green Eggs Cafe – a red velvet dream!

Green Eggs Cafe – 212 S. 13th St (cnr Locust St), Philadelphia. http://greeneggscafe.com/

There was one reason I wanted to try Green Eggs Cafe – a photo that a friend uploaded on Facebook from her meal here. This was the dish:

Red velvet pancakes

The famous red velvet pancakes

One word – amazing. I usually dont start my blog posts with a photo, but seriously, anyone in Philly should go here to try these pancakes! We had to wait about 40 minutes for a table for 4 on a Saturday, but the wait was worth it.

We decided to get a savoury dish each and then share pancakes – what we ate:

  • Shrimp & Grits Benedict ($12): Gulf shrimp, stone ground grits with aged cheddar and toast points topped with two poached eggs and Vermont cheddar sauce. I had just visited New Orleans recently and was excited to see grits on the menu. This was a really yummy version of my favourite brunch dish – the benedict. The shrimp was really big, the hollandaise really light and most importantly, the grits did not disappoint.
  • Chicken & Waffles Benedict ($11): Southern fried chicken breast and poached country eggs on buttermilk waffles with sage maple and Louisana Hot Sauce Hollandaise. Again, a Southern dish and again did not disappoint! I’ve actually never had fried chicken and waffles before despite being in the US for over a year. Really tasty!
  • Breakfast Burrito ($12) : Habañero tortilla with eggs, corn, house made pork chorizo, potatoes, peppers, and onions, tex mex cheese topped with Pico de Gallo, sour cream, avocado, whole black beans, and fire roasted red pepper black bean sauce. A very tasty version of the breakfast burrito…
  • Red Velvet Pancakes  ($12): Red Velvet buttermilk pancakes with chocolate morsels layered with strawberry mascarpone and topped with fresh strawberries, maple syrup and chantilly cream. SO SO good! I loved the fact that the mascarpone had bits of chocolate in it. Be warned that 4 of us only managed to finish half of the whole thing, so dont over order!
Food

Clockwise from top: shrimp & grits benedict, breakfast burrito, chicken & waffles benedict

the verdict: 9/10 – a great brunch spot offering more than just your typical breakfast dishes at great value

don’t forget to order: the red velvet pancakes!

to try next time: creme brulee french toast…say what?
