York Lane – York Lane, Sydney (behind Wynyard Station). http://www.yorklane.com/
Finding a cafe in the Sydney CBD which not only oozes of character but provides good food is often a hard ask. Look no further – York Lane cafe provides both, assuming you can get a table. Plus it’s espresso bar/cafe by day & restaurant/bar by night
I arrived on York Lane, but didn’t immediately spot any cafes. I did see some red crates and a cryptic sign “RK NE” – I had arrived at York Lane cafe.
It was 1pm on a Friday – I was greeted by the friendly man behind the counter (I got the impression he was the owner) and was shown to a cute table for two while I waited for C. The cafe has a great feel to it – small, quirky (a bicycle is a feature of the large side wall) and welcoming. Within minutes, a crowd had arrived and the cafe was buzzing. Perfect timing.
What we ate & drank:
- Duck pancakes with hoisin sauce ($12): extremely tasty duck with just the right mix of greens. I was impressed with the amount of meat that was provided – many places skimp on the duck, but YL was very generous here. C found it slightly on the salty side, but I didn’t mind.
- Slow-cooked lamb with cannellini beans & tomato + bread on the side ($12): oh so comforting on a cold winters day! A big fan of this, although a little more bread would have been nice.
- Chai latte & soy flat white, both were
the verdict: 8/10 – a great little hole-in-the-wall spot oozing with character & very tasty food. another great addition to the York St area.
dont forget to order: slow cooked lamb with cannellini beans, tomato and bread on the side. very hearty.
